The benefits of collar and hames is that it is a lot easier for horses to pull more weight than with a traditional breast collar style harness.  If you are buying a team harnesses you may need to purchase a set of collars if you don't have them.  You can also use collar and hames on a single harness as pictured below.

How to Measure for a Proper Fitting Collar: When it comes to measuring your horses collar take your time to make sure it is done right!  If a collar is to big it will give your horse rubbing sores, if it is to small your horse wont be able to breath properly.  If you know someone familiar with measuring collars you may want to seek their assistance.  The easiest way to measure for the proper size is to take two carpenters squares and put them together around your horses neck.  Put them together so one is right side up and the other is up side down, this will be like a box now around your horses neck.  Now slide them together resting the top carpenters square just on the neck side of the wither bone, and the bottom carpenters square above the chest (where the breast collar sits) and below the neck line.  Avoid making this measurement to tight but not to loose either, you want it to be just right.  If your horse is a half size go to the next size up.  For instance if you measure your horse at 11 and a 1/2 inches, he will take a size 12 collar.  When your horses collar is properly fitted you will be able to fit your hand snugly in between the bottom of the collar and your horses neck (see photo on left).  This will allow for your horses movement.  Please feel free to call us if you need any further assistance and we will be happy to walk you through it.  A horse that has a properly fitted collar is a happy horse.
